Team History

The Gentlemen of Dubuque Rugby Football Club was started in 1997 by Dan Smith. Other contributors that helped start the club were Bob Freese, Bill Scallon, Ron Pole, and Mark May. In our initial season we were barely able to fill a side, eventually finishing last at the All-Iowa Rugby tourney in Division III. The next year we won a couple of matches ( 1st year the team actually won only one game and scored no points at the All-Iowa). We again finished near the bottom of DIII All-Iowa tourney. 1999 saw us import a South African prop by the name of Nico Koeglenberg. That Spring the team won all it’s games and finished 2nd in the DIII category of the All-Iowa tourney. The next year saw 2 South African’s, Nico and Neil Mangiegelli. The team again went undefeated and this time won the DIII title. 2001 saw team coach Michael Stewart-another South African player, flyhalf-take the team to 2nd place in the DII level of the All-Iowa. 2002 the team under Stewart won the title in DII. 2003 saw new coach, A.C. Prinsloo, another South African, take the team to the title game of DI at the All-Iowa tourney. In 2004 under Steve Ruden the team played very competitive rugby on a higher plan then we have ever played before. Presently the club is a Iowa DI club, National DIII. The team supports a men’s side, a women’s side, and the possibility of a high school side (if enough kids show interest.) we have toured Arizona, and Florida three times during early March. The last tour was in March 2004. the club has developed and supported numerous Iowa select side players and also some have reached the Midwest Select side level to play in National tourney’s. in April 2003 the club qualified for it’s first trip to the National DIII tourney. The club also teaches rugby at Loras Sports Camp to boys and girls age 7 thru 14 and 2 days each Spring and Fall at Jefferson and Washington Jr Highs.
