April 23, 2005 Dubuque 10 - Rockford 25
On a cold, windy day in Rockford
Dubuque found themselves down early. Rockford came out early and scored
3 early tries, to go up 15-0. Till Matt Roberts (prop) scored a try off
a nice mal. Dubuque went into the half only down 10. In the second
neither team could really get anything going, but Rockford managed to
get a try and conversion kick to finalize their winning score of 15.
Dubuque's In-Center, Austin Goodman had a nice effort when blocking a
Rockford's kick and recovering it the air to score Dubuque's second
try.
April 16, 2005 Dubuque 12 - Iowa Falls 12 and Dubuque 5

In the first game of the afternoon
Dubuque unfortunately tied Iowa 12-12. In the first half Dubuque pulled
ahead 12-0 after the Goodman brothers Austin (In-Center) and Seth (Lock)
each scored tries. It was Seth's first try with the club. Austin made
one of this two conversion kicks and Dubuque was up early. Then nearly
the whole last five minutes of the half were spent in between Dubuque's
own tri-line and the 5 meters mark. Dubuque had a strong defensive to
whole till the final seconds of the half when Iowa Falls sneaked in the
the tri-zone, the conversion kick was good and the pulled within 5.
Into the second half, Dubuque changed its lineup to a much younger
lineup and played very strong with a lot on first time rugby players.
Only giving up a single try throughout the whole second half. In the
next game Dubuque played a very much improved Jones County team. The
whole first half was a defensive battle between the two teams, leaving
the half tied 0-0. Then the second half was much like the first, until
Nick Schueller (Flanker) and an amazing rip and roll then to barrel his
way into the tri-zone. Nick also scored his first try with the team.
This was all Dubuque needed to pull out the victory, winning 5-0. The
men of the match were Corey Birkle (Backs) and Chris Kirkpatrick
(Forwards).
April 9, 2005 Dubuque 21 - University of Iowa 17
In this weekends match Dubuque
found themselves in what is becoming a familiar place, coming back in
the second half after being down. Iowa scored two tries quick and
earlier. Putting them up 12-0 earlier in the half. Dubuque did show
some life in the first half when Corey Birkle, Fly-half, scored on some
nifty moves after getting the ball out from the scrum ten meters from
the tri-line. Austin Goodman's, In-Center, conversion kick was good.
Iowa scored once more before half and Dubuque went into the second half
7-17. Dubuque came into the second half fired up when Kevin Bulava,
Scrum-half, scored during a maul. The conversion kick afterwards was
good by Goodman and Dubuque was only down by three. Finally, in his
first ever Rugby match Brandon Jones, Wing, scored on a fifty meter
break away down the sideline. The kick after by Goodman was good once
again and Dubuque was up 21-17 and never looked back. The men of the
match for the backs was Austin Goodman and for the forwards was Matt
Roberts.
April 2, 2005 Gentlemen of Dubuque Spring Tournament
In Dubuque's first match they
tied the Iowa City Ducks in a defensive battle 12-12. Dubuque's first
try was scored by winger Z on a 50 meter break away and the other was
scored by Kevin Bulava, Scrum-half, by hustling to a block kicked that
went into the try zone through most of the Iowa City defense. In the
next match Dubuque did not manage to get in the score board losing to
the Cedar Rapids Headhunters 0-19. Though the score did not reflect
Dubuque play, they put together many great drives but could not
capitalize down near the tri-line. In the last game Dubuque beat Peoria
26-15. Peoria started of fast scoring two tries in the first seven
minutes game, but failed to make both conversions. Dubuque bounced back
when Fullback Joseph Kaczmarski scored from 15 meters out. In-center,
Austin Goodman's conversion kick was good. Then with a couple lefts in
the half Austin Goodman scored on a break away starting on Dubuque's end
of the pitch. Out-center, Zach Singsank's conversion kick was good and
went into the second half up 14-12. Dubuque never looked back from
there, carrying the intensity into the second half. One when Lock, Jeff
Striet pick up a bobble thrown in and ran through Peoria's entire pack
scoring for 20 meters out, Singsank's conversion was no good. Then with
a minute left in the match Zach Singsank intercept a Peoria back-line
pass and was off to the races covering the whole length of the pitch.
In the Dubuque had a very solid performance going 1-1-1. The winners of
the 2005 spring tourney for the A-Division was Iowa City Ducks and for
the B-Division was Jones County Gothic's.
March 26, 2005 Dubuque 10 - Cedar Rapids 29
Dubuque
struggled this weekend in battle against long time rivals Cedar Rapids
Head Hunters. Dubuque lacking experience of many new players in the
forward pack had a hard time winning scrums. Cedar Rapids scored 3 tries
toward the end of the first half to put them up 17-0 at half time.
Dubuque surged back when prop Cory Miller got in for a try making the
score 17-5. Cedar Rapids answered with yet another try making the score
24-5. The Head Hunters were able to get in one more try bringing the
score to 29-5. In lasting desperation Dubuque’s captain Matt Roberts was
able to touch down the inflated pigskin for another try. The final score
Dubuque 10- Cedar Rapids 29
